Has anyone on this forum constructed the ax81, zx81 based on a 
atmega1284 ?

Why are you asking? The code should run on a mega1284 too. What is your 
specific problem?

I've constructed 2 ax81s one on the chip basic board and the other on 
the ax81b board, have you tried the LCD attachment ? I have the WD board 
!
