Programming the flash using Nios II command shell

Hello All
I am trying to compile my application and and RTE stack using Nios II 
command shell but when i try to excute any of the following command i 
receive error msg

Commands :
i: make clean
ii: make build
iii: make downlboot

Error: make : *** No rule make target 'clean' stop
       make : *** No rule make target 'build' stop

Can any one tell me where i am going wrong i am totaly new with Quartus 
II and Nios II so i would be gratefull if any one can help and tell me 
how to compile and program flash.
