External Memory Controller Initialization

Hi,
    I am using LPC32xx. I am trying to access SDRAM after initializing 
EMC. But I am unable to read/write data from SDRAM. Do I need to 
initialize MMU and Caches to access SDRAM? If yes (why?), can anybody 
please provide init code for mmu and caches?
