Unicode/GB2312 support??

I'm having some problems with GB2312/Unicode support on GCC.
Questions:
- Can GCC support unicode string type?? And how to turn it on??
- Is there any GB2312 to unicode, unicode to GB2312 converter library
  for GCC?? or where can I get some ready source code to port in??
