For my FPGA-Kit decision of LX9 MicroBoard, Nexys 3 or Atlys I have created a comparison list, which is attached. Here are my personally pro and cons: LX9 from Avnet: + small and low price (103€) + good user guide and video from Avnet for beginners + all SW-licenses for LX9 included (Chipscope Pro and SDK) + for PMOD-Interface there are available a lot of modules - only 16 I/O available externally from two PMODs (12pins) (PmodCLP (LCD parallel) uses already nearly both PMODs) Nexys: + 72 I/O available externally from 4 PMOD and 1 VMOD + power supply from USB or external wall-power supply + USB Host for mouse, keyboard and USB-Stick + VGA Interface - no SW-Licenses included (price on Xilinx is over 3000€) Atlys + high performance + HDMI Interface (2 In and 2 Out) + AC-97 Audio Codex - for power supply always external wall-power supply necessary - no SW-Licenses included - expensive (319€) - only one PMOD interface Because I would like to take the kits also on business trips with me and I do not need HDMI yet, Nexys would be my favorite, because of the high number of external I/Os. On the other hand, with the LX9 I get the normally expensive SW-Licenses and it has a better user-guide for beginners.
